Seung Ri’s Struggles

At January 14 at the Golden Disk rehearsal when he sprained his ankle, it did not affect the actual performance when he performed. Although it did not affect him too much, the hearts of the audiences were very nervous for him. Even though the dancers offered to help him, Seung Ri refused and rather walk himself, limping. These couple of days, it has been very busy for him and it seems that walking for him has been a problem. The others did not expect him to perform anytime soon, but he still came to perform. Fans have been wanting to talk to SR about his situation. A couple days later, GD said on the radio that SR’s competitive side to keep on performing caused him to need to go to the hospital even when he knew he couldn’t do it. During the Music Bank performance day, he had to go to the hospital, but they still won many awards. SR to GD-“Hyung! I want to die!!!” This unlucky boy, at the year’s end when it is the most busiest, he had to sprain his ankle. When there was the YG Performance, all he could do was stay home and rest. Starting Out

Seung Ri has been a self-confident and hard-working boy child. When he just started out in Gwang Joo, he was one of the main members in this dance group and that’s how people started to notice him. But he was not famous as GD and his experiences. When SR’s classmates were busy afterschool studying, he went to practice his dancing. But GD says that him dancing instead of studying is not a good habit. GD teases, “You are always leaving everyone behind and going by yourself to fun. What a bad student!” SR replies, “Aigoo, no I’m not! I am really practicing really hard!” SR’s dancing style back then was not Hip-Hop, but a Disco style. Sometimes in his practice times, he stumbles about the Trot background related things. In Gwang Joo’s big mall, there are many dance performances and the stick-skinny SR is there trying to dance among the other people. Many people praise that SR is the best out of the group, he stands out, he dances very well, has enthusiastic expressions, and brings out the “dance” in everyone. This is own unique personality from then to now. In YG, he is a very great dancer and a good choreographer. The jump rope dancing move in Last Farewell is SR’s creation. “If someone asks me what I do best, I would say dance.” This is what he thinks of himself.

 

First Challenge

    With a red hot shirt and tea colored glasses, this was SR’s first image on Battle Shinhwa. Honestly, at that time it was really hard for people to be impressed by him. SR was like a little kid that was trying to act mature. During Battle Shinhwa it was hard for anyone to remember because he was too ordinary. In 2005 when he was 16, SR and his friend was always traveling back and forth from Seoul and Gwang Joo. They would take pictures on the express train to have memories and to also show his parents what he was doing that caused his parents to have to use so much money on him. When he lost a contest, he would always think about his parents support. He is not embarrassed to say that he is a Gwang Joo person, even when he was introducing himself in contests, he would say in his native language. Even though he looks intelligent, but he needs people to give him space to improve and does not like people to always poke him around. He was falling asleep during practice and people said that his attitude was not respectful. In order to be more entertaining on this show, he tried to arrange new things. “I used to do things seriously, but because of some things, he started to fall asleep.” “Before a performance on the stage, you first have to learn how to stand on the stage.” This was one of the biggest things that he learned from being on Battle Shinhwa. SR personality is that he likes to live a relaxed and laid-back life. Every time they go one step forward, they would tell SR that it’s gonna get harder. In order to improve, he must be able to withstand the hard struggles. In 2005 Shinhwa Summer Story performance, SR sang “Wild Eyes” with them. If no one talks about it, probably no one would have noticed him during that time. “Nervous to the point that I couldn’t say anything. The stage was too big. And plus, performing with Shinhwa hyungs made me even more nervous.”

 Changing/Improving

     Because many people liked the song “One Day One Day (Next Day?)” or when people started liking him when he sang a Justin Timberlake song, people started getting impressed by him. His improvement that he made when he was in Battle Shinhwa singing a song “Rain” was very big from how he is now. He has made a big impression and is starting to get better. When SR just started out and was doing a false voice (voice that was not his singing voice), he really didn’t care and did not try to do any better or make it sound as best as possible. A person said, “Right now we are choosing a singer, not a dancer.” One week later, they are choosing people again. The person said happily afterwards, “I did not know that SR would sing that well.” SR is very confident and does not like to lose and that his unique point because of his past unsuccessful performances and it becomes more and more noticeable. In the beginning when they were choosing people for the Battle Shinhwa, SR had a careless type of confidence. Even though it was not a good thing to have, this was what motivated SR to keep on improving. When SR came out to sing, SR was hurt when he got negative comments. “Should I give up? This thought was bothering him and he thought that he should not just give up so easily. What am I to be ashamed of? This is what I want.” At that time afterwards, his confidence boosted up again. The stage was a privilege for him and if he made the wrong decision, he would definitely regret it. With his kind of talent as a kid, these sad times would just help him be even better in the future when these kind of times come again.

            When SR did not make Battle Shinhwa, he became a trainee in the YG Company. When he first got into it, his rank was very low. Not only did he need to clean up the practice rooms, he needed to make up new ideas. YG Company does not give the new trainees any special training, they can only learn from ordinary teachers. If a person does not try to improve themselves, then they will have a chance to be kicked out. When he was in YG, every one of the trainees was already very smart but people did not notice them. He reminisces, saying, “When I was first in the company, the manager would not call my name just say “you”, but at that time the manager already called other people their names. But after I improved, then he started to call me by my name. Even before when he only got 3-4 hours of sleep, before he went to sleep he was always thinking about a lot of things. “Even though I got a lot of dance practice, before I went to sleep I would think about a lot of things like how I was moving on the stage, my expressions, and movements.” He would stress and think, “What kind of expression should I have when it is my turn to sing during the performance?”

 Maknae’s Fate

      When SR first meet the leader, he was still a trainee (only a little improvement). GD who has performed ever since he was little, he always hoped that other people would tell him that he does well because he has confidence that he can do well. GD-“You are a Gwang Joo, did you know who I am when you lived there?” SR-“Oh, I know.” GD-“After seeing me, what do you think?” SR-“Oh you look a little older than your actual age.” Ever since then, he has a little bit of admiration and envy towards him. SR always thinks about GD. “This kid always pretends he does not see anyone and laughs to himself. Doesn’t he need to keep him image? How come you get so happy when you see a female!” There are two people that SR likes to imitate and that is bonobono and Stephen Chow; he also has some interest in beatbox, but everytime he thinks about it, GD appears in his mind and tells him that he shouldn’t. Once SR is stressed out, he gets nervous and constantly blinks his eyes. Everytime he does this, the fans already know his feeling and what’s happening. TOP hyung says that some part of SR’s body looks best, but SR thinks that his neck bone(?) is the best looking. But GD says, “I think his round shoulder looks the best. Don’t you know that while I wear long sleeves, he wears short sleeves! It’s because of his shoulders!”
    Big Bang’s maknae, has recently gotten a new nickname “worker boy”. In all the variety shows that he was in, he was naturally the one that suffers. He gave the audience a very sad and pitiful image, which makes people sympathetic heart for him.
